Re-defining futures for coastal communities in a changing climate
Meet Shayla
Principal & Founder
The ability to contribute to transformative change in science and socio-political environments is what drives me. Even if this change occurs beyond my lifetime. Leading research that empowers local communities to advance diverse priorities in marine conservation is deeply important to me. Place-based participatory research and engagement is often missing from marine affairs, yet may be one of the most effective ways to achieve both biodiversity and cultural objectives.
Halfway through university studies, which were originally focused on marine biology, I became aware of my Métis ancestry. This opened the door to a rewarding journey of realizing the importance of Indigenous people’s place in environmental conservation. My experience in the environmental sector over the last decade broadly includes; marine and freshwater ecological monitoring, climate change incorporation in marine spatial planning, and working with species at risk. The more recent experience I have in social sciences is encompassed by; decolonizing research methodologies, Indigenous Knowledge re-emergence, and co-production towards ethical space.
I have had the incredible privilege to grow up and live on the unceded territory of the We Wai Kai First Nation, otherwise known as Quadra Island, BC Canada. It is here that I developed a deep passion and curiosity for the ocean. From my travels to the Arctic and Amazon, I am an adventurer at heart and lifelong learner. I am grateful for my career in marine conservation and experience as a Métis woman, which leads me to make meaningful contributions in my field at home in BC, and around the world.
